Rats rule continues

4/07/2008 10:57:00 AM
WNA - The Rats' seniors continued their unbeaten streak on Saturday when they defeated Horsham Saints by 25 goals at Coughlin Park.

Played indoors in the stadium, the conditions suited the Rats down to the ground, who do the majority of their training at the Ararat Community College gym.

The Rats looked sharp from the outset and were able to open up an early lead.

Jade Fiscalini played a terrific game in defence, combating Saints' tall shooter Shannon Wilkinson very effectively, while Jess Higgins continues to show promising signs in her game time.

Olivia West was again the Rats' best player through the mid court. Playing against a fast aggressive centre she kept her cool and gave the Rats plenty of drive.

Megan Shea continued her amazing form in the goal circle, shooting 52 of the Rats 59 goals.

The Rats were able to move players around in the last quarter and try different positions, something that will prove invaluable if the need arises for positional changes come finals time.

The Rats face the Dimboola Roos tomorrow, with the girls hoping to score another big win over the sixth placed Roos.

The Rats may look to try Jess Higgins in defence with Jade Fiscalini this time around, due to the expected absence of regular defender Tahnee Waterston next week.

The Rats' reserves had a thrilling contest with the Saints, unluckily going down by just one goal, 26 to 27.

The Rats had the chance to jump into sixth spot on the ladder but could not quite manage it, the Saints shooting the winning goal right on the final buzzer.

Robyn Gibson took the helm as head coach for the day in the absence of Megan Taylor, rotating players around the court, with Catherine Dalgleish and Sarah Bigmore shooting 13 goals each in a pleasing aspect of the game.

The under 17 Rats retained their number one ranking on the Wimmera League ladder with a convincing 46 to 14 goal victory over the Horsham Saints.

Georgie Eastick continued her stellar form in the goal circle shooting 29 goals for the victors, also combining well with Kate Wilson who shot 17 goals to be the Rats' best player.

In the under 15 game the Rats recorded a pleasing victory, winning 28 to 19 over the Saints.

The Rats consolidated their spot in the top three, keeping their noses in front of the Horsham Diggers who drew with second placed Horsham Demons last week.

Zoe Eastick was voted the Rats best player for her tireless work through the mid court.

The baby Rats again played well and keep improving each week, despite an 11 goal loss.

Mikaela Bell shot eight goals for the Rats, while Lauri Williamson was voted best player on the day.
