ARARAT - It was a day for the big guns at the Wimmera Racing Club's Ararat meeting on Monday.
Leading trainer Darren Weir went close to cementing the title of the region's leading trainer for season 07-08 and leading jockeys Dean Yendall and Sebastian Murphy traded blows in their battle for the jockeys' title.
Weir continued his stellar season preparing three winners on the ten race card.
He scored wins with Fuji Fame in race four, The Catarena in race seven and then capped off his day by taking out the feature NMIT Handicap over 1310m with promising mare Boss It's Over.
Boss It's Over, ridden by stable apprentice Jarrod Fry, scored an unbelievably easy victory against quality opposition when she careered away in the straight to win by seven lengths from consistent Swan Hill galloper Old Songs, trained by Con Kelly, with Acceleration a further length and a half away in third place.
Not to be outdone another Ballarat trainer in Robert Smerdon also saddled up three winners, scoring with Line Of Sight in race three, Runaway Combi in race nine and Devi Garh in race 10.
The jockeys weren't exactly sharing the spoils either with winning doubles to Yendall, Murphy, and Melbourne based hoop Sam Hyland.
Yendall scored in race one with Dalizan, trained by Dan O'Sullivan and then with a late pick up ride aboard the Bill Wilde trained Sally's Comet in the second event to take a three win lead over Murphy in the Wimmera Jockeys' Premiership.
It wasn't long before the young gun hit back though with Murphy scoring twice for Weir aboard Fuji Fame and The Catarena to draw back within one win with two meetings remaining for the season.
Hyland rode two of the Smerdon trained winners, Line Of Sight and Runaway Combi to also stamp his class on the meeting.
