GCA - Tatyoon began its Grampians Cricket Association premiership defence in fine style, belting Navarre by 170 runs.
Aiming for its heir fifth consecutive A grade premiership, Tatyoon was sent in by Navarre and duly punished an undermanned Grasshoppers' attack, finishing at 7/218 at the completion of its 40 overs.
The return of gun bat Geoff Phillips to the top order was a welcome one for the Hawks, Phillips' 59 the highest score by any batsmen on the day.
All Tatyoon batsmen bar one reached double figures to push the total past 200.
In reply Navarre had no answers, and could manage just 7/48 from its 40 overs, with Andrew McDougall the chief destroyer for the Hawks, claiming 3/14.
St Andrews started its season well, recording a comfortable victory over A grade newcomers Rhymney/Moyston.
Rhymney/Moyston won the toss and batted first, however due to some miserly bowling and with several players missing, only managed to creep to 8/68 at the closure of its innings.
New recruit Mal Russell made 30 to try and give Rhymney/Moyston some chance, however the Saints' attack bowled consistently to pressure the batsmen.
The Saints were untroubled in their run chase, passing the target with ease.
Opener Graeme Foster was the best of the batsmen with 66, continuing his liking for the first game of the year, having scored half-centuries in the first round of the past three seasons.
Cameos came from Andrew Dalgleish (37) and son Lauchlan (33 not out) to see the Saints finish the day on 5/187.
In a semi final rematch from last year, Swifts/Great Western turned the tables on Pomonal with a solid 40 run victory.
Pomonal batted first and looked strong with the score at 2/70 midway through the innings.
The combine was missing a large portion of its bowling stocks from last season and Pomonal should have been able to capitalise on this, however through some careless shot selection crumbled somewhat to finish at 8/133 at the end of its 40 overs.
Clayton Mackley top scored for Pomonal with 34, gaining support from new recruit Russell Armstrong who made 29.
Spinner Marc Collins was the best of the bowlers for Swifts, taking 5/30 from his eight overs.
In reply Pomonal again looked in the box seat early on, the combine reeling at 2/4 with both openers back in the pavillion.
A solid partnership between Craig Marrow and Jesse Eckel helped to resurrect the innings and push the score to 46, before Eckel fell to a sharp catch at mid wicket.
Marrow was dismissed just five runs later and the game was in the balance, however this was where Pomonal's joy ended, with Brendan Pateman (56 not out) and Nic Clough (61 not out) guiding the combine home with seven overs to spare.
In the final game of the round Aradale managed to sneak past Youth Club to get its season off to a winning start.
Youth Club batted first, and although a number of batsmen got starts, only managed 8/117 from its 40 overs.
Marcus Marrow was the only Clubber to look overly dangerous with an unbeaten 34 in the middle order.
Aradale set about chasing down the Youth Club total, aided by an opening 70 run stand between Trav Horvatek and Clint Rodger, who top scored with 43.
Both were dismissed before the total could reach 80, however with plenty of wickets in hand, managed to secure the win in the second last over of the day.
Narvin Dharmatilake was best for Youth Club, claiming 4/10 from his five overs.
