Cortney represents Country

ARARAT - Ararat basketball prodigy Cortney Williamson is gearing up to represent Victoria Country after being selected for the under 18 women's team.

Williamson will compete at the National Under 18 Championships for the second time; last year she played in the under 16 team.

The national tournament will be played at Ballarat during the second week of the school holidays.

The tournament brings together the best under 18 men's and women's players from every state and territory in Australia, as well as men's and women's teams from New Zealand.

Each state has one country and one metropolitan team competing at the tournament, with talent scouts keeping a close eye on proceedings.

Williamson is no stranger to representative basketball and has proved she can mix it with the best of them.

As well as previously competing at the Nationals, Williamson has represented Victoria Country at the Country Cup and Pacific Coast Slam on four different occasions, an impressive effort for any young basketballer.

On top of this, Williamson, along with twin sister Jess, represents the Melbourne Tigers in the championship division of the Victorian Junior Basketball Championship League and has notched up games with the Tigers Big V Women's league team, all at the ripe old age of 16.

The skilful point guard will be under the guidance of highly credentialed coach Paul O'Brien, who has returned to Victoria after a stint in Western Australia coaching the state's Women's National Basketball League team.

Williamson has attended five weekends of training camps in preparation for the event; two in Geelong, two in Bendigo and one in Ballarat.

Williamson is unsure whether she will start or play a role off the bench for her team, as the other point guard selected is currently touring France with the AIS and unable to train.

One indicator of how highly Williamson is regarded at the top level is her selection as vice-captain of the Victorian Country under 18 girls' team, a massive achievement for someone coming from a small association.

Williamson will make her mark at the National Championships and continue to create waves in basketball circles around the state.

Another Ararat basketballer, Bernard Peoples, was selected as an emergency for the under 18 boys side, but has been unable to train due to injury.
