Tatyoon salutes successful season

3/10/2008 10:41:00 AM
TATYOON - Tatyoon Football Club has recently held best and fairest counts for seniors, reserves and under 16s.

It was another very successful year on the field for the Hawks, their senior side winning a third consecutive flag while the reserves' side was runner-up.

In the senior vote count new recruit Richard Tucker was crowned best and fairest, polling 66 votes to win easily from runner-up Andrew Ward on 39.

Tucker has played senior football both with Ararat Rats in the Wimmera Football League and Ballarat Swans in the Ballarat Football League, proving himself to be a quality senior player at any level.

This season he opted for a change of colour to the brown and gold of the Hawks and relished the opportunity.

Playing predominantly as a midfielder changing forward, Tucker showed plenty of class, racking up possessions at will and using the ball effectively, while also displaying his trademark toughness.

Also able to push forward and kick goals, Tucker was a key contributor in the Hawks' premiership success, and was highly rated throughout the Mininera and District Football League.

Runner-up Andrew Ward was another key component of the Hawks' midfield, and enjoyed his return to football after taking a year off last season to play cricket in England.

Possessing a very dangerous left boot, Tatyoon was only too happy to have the ball in his hands as Ward uses the ball particularly well.

Ward was also a terrific leader around the club, being an assistant coach for the side this season.

Young gun Andy Maconachie was just three votes shy of Ward in third place after a terrific second half to the season.

Maconachie received the VCFL medal for best on ground in the grand final, and also scored awards for best under 21 player and best in finals at the presentation day.

Also of note was Tim Barr, who won the Most Serviceable Trophy for the third year running.

In the reserves Travis McMahon was crowned best and fairest, two votes ahead of utility Ben Devlin.

McMahon polled 34 votes, two clear of Devlin on 32 in what proved to be a very close count.

McMahon is a tough in-and-under player, and was one of the Hawks' best performers throughout their finals series.

In the under 16 count, Jack Ganley was the winner, polling 75 votes to finish well clear of Joel Fitzpatrick on 53.

There were many other awards presented on the day.

All coaches across the grades were also recognised, along with club umpires Billy Campbell, Perc O'Brien, Greg Joyce, Craig Astbury and Andrew Louder.

The best club person award went to under 16 coach Zander McDougall.

McDougall has coached the under 16s for the past two seasons, and put countless hours into developing the younger players in the club, and also getting a team on the ground each week with a lack of numbers.

McDougall has indicated he will continue on as coach in 2009.

Tatyoon president Tim Fraser also presented a life membership to Mark Dyer for outstanding service to the football club.

Dyer has served on the committee for 25 years, including five terms as president.

He has also been the club's caterer, working tirelessly at every club function.
