ARARAT - Looking for a place to share skills, make or repair things, socialise or just sit and enjoy the sunshine?
Then the newly formed Men's Shed could be the place for you.
The Ararat Community Men's Shed Enterprise (ACME) will operate out of the former Ararat and District Junior Football Association clubrooms at Richardson Oval and held its inaugural meeting this month, where a committee was elected to steer the project.
The shed is a not for profit initiative designed to promote the health and wellbeing mainly of retired and older men in the community, but will be accessible to all members of the community. The committee is setting up a workshop style facility were men can `do what men do'.
Depending on the individual, those who come along to the shed can share and develop skills, make or repair things, talk, relax, socialise, tell jokes, relate experiences, listen to others, discuss health and other problems, talk about anything, support each other, cook lunch or do nothing if that's what they want!
There are around 2000 Men's Sheds nationally with more than 70 in Victoria.
Men's Sheds have proven to be great places to break the boredom that is often associated with a sudden influx of time through major life-changes such as downsizing of housing, loss of partner or retirement.
The Ararat Men's Shed will be a great place for men with leisure time to tinker around in a communal shed tackling either personal or community focused projects.
It is hope the shed will offer a fully equipped workshop for men to tackle all sorts of projects.
Men can bring along a project to work on, or gain help and inspiration from others.
The committee elected at this month's meeting includes president Jack White, secretary Charlie Martin and treasurer David Hair with a committee of Chris Kuchel and Ian Carman.
These and other men will be on hand to help out.
The project is also seeking sponsors to help continue into the future.
