Free Cancer Council seminar

7/10/2008 9:12:00 AM
ARARAT - Cancer has touched the lives of many in Ararat Rural City with around 64 people diagnosed with cancer each year.

The community is invited to attend a free seminar that the Cancer Council Victoria is holding on October 24 to discuss the progression in the fight against cancer.

Dr Amanda Hordern, deputy director of the Cancer Information and Support Service at the Cancer Council said the free seminar was an opportunity for Ararat residents to learn more about a range of cancer issues.

"The seminar is also an important way for those who have been affected by cancer either as a patient or carer, to connect with other cancer survivors and share their experiences, and find out what support is available,'' Dr Hordern said.

"It also provides an excellent opportunity for community members to ask any questions they might have on cancer, and to talk about local issues the Ararat community is facing.

"I'd urge anyone from the area who wants to know more about cancer to join us at this free seminar.''

Also presenting at the seminar is the director of the Cancer Council Victoria, Professor David Hill, director of communications Jane Sullivan and fundraising spokesperson Rob Petrie.

Professor Hill will discuss the latest cancer statistics and present information on cancer research and prevention.

Mr Petrie will highlight the amazing work that the Ararat community has done to support recent fundraising events such as Daffodil Day.

Jane Sullivan will be introducing the Cancer Council's new Internet site and the many functions available to the public that will assist through one's cancer journey.

The Cancer Council Victoria's Ararat Cancer Information Seminar will be held on Friday October 24 from 10am to 12.30pm at the Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre Great Hall, Ararat.

Topics will include the Cancer Council's work in the Ararat community, reducing your risk of cancer, coping with a cancer diagnosis, support services for people affected by cancer, their family and friends and fundraising in the Ararat community.

The seminar is free, refreshments will be provided, and all community members are invited to attend. Registrations are essential; for more information or to register, call 1300 65 65 85 between 10am and 4pm.

For more information please phone Jane Sullivan on 0407 346 021.
